Introduction

Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA) is a VISION 2020 conceptualization of the Honorable President of India, late Dr.A.P.J.Kalam. One of the main philosophies as projected is to make rural areas as attractive to investors as in cities, then rural areas too will generate urban-style employment leading to a reduction in rural-urban migration. It states that a new thrust to all-round rural development can be achieved through the provision of four critical connectivity’s (Physical, Economic, Knowledge and Electronic). Each region has its own concerns that are best addressed at local levels, particularly in rural areas where resources are thin, capacity lacking and geospatial resources often do not exists, whereas in urban areas geospatial technology is well entrenched. The needs of different areas vary greatly. Technological advancement is a key driver for economic growth and sustainable development. Geospatial technologies with proven capabilities for supporting decision making can effectively support governance, enable sustainable development, assist in better management of business process as well as bring location based information closer to the people. As India endeavors to achieve its developmental goals, the multifaceted and specialized capabilities offered by geospatial technologies will play a defining role for information management in future with applications of great social and national significance Punjab has emerged as one of the fastest developing states of India using Space Technologies in the development, planning and management of natural resources and Infrastructure development. As state progresses towards high industrialization and technological advancement, decision makers will continue to face several challenges for effective governance such as rapid growth in population, environmental concerns, resource shortages and security issues. Thus state requires an efficient and advanced information and knowledge regime to brace itself for the envisaged economic growth; therefore it is most appropriate to organize this conference in the state of Punjab. This conference will provide a unique opportunity to the delegates to enhance and share their knowledge.
